Phra Phuttho Noi is a highly revered and significant Buddhist amulet, created by Khun Mae Boonruen Tongboontum, a laywoman known for her impeccable moral conduct and profound spiritual insight. The history of Phra Phuttho Noi is deeply intertwined with the life of Khun Mae Boonruen.

 

 

Khun Mae Boonruen Tongboontum (1877 - 1964)

 

  • Birth and Education: Khun Mae Boonruen Klinphaka was born on Sunday, March 4, 1877, in Khlong Sam Wa, Min Buri District, Phra Nakhon Province (now Bangkok), into a poor family. Her father was Mr. Yim Klinphaka and her mother was Mrs. Suan Klinphaka. Although she did not receive formal education, she was intelligent and deeply interested in studying and practicing Dhamma with great discipline.

  • Dhamma Practice and Spiritual Power: Khun Mae Boonruen had immense faith in Buddhism and practiced Vipassana meditation diligently and continuously. It is believed that she attained a high level of spiritual insight, had extraordinary psychic powers, and could foresee events. She was respected by both monks and laypeople alike.

  • Helping Others: With her compassion and spiritual power, Khun Mae Boonruen helped many people—healing illnesses through prayers and holy water, offering Dhamma advice, and providing various kinds of assistance. Her reputation for kindness and spiritual strength became widespread.

  • Creation of Sacred Objects: Khun Mae Boonruen created many sacred amulets as a remembrance and as a spiritual anchor for devotees. The most renowned among them is Phra Phuttho Noi.

 

 

Phra Phuttho Noi

 

  • Creation: Phra Phuttho Noi was created at Wat Awutwikasitaram, Bang Phlat Nok, Thonburi, in 1951 (BE 2494), with Khun Mae Boonruen participating in its creation and consecration through prayer.

  • Types and Features: Several types of Phra Phuttho Noi were made, such as Jumbo, Large, Medium, and Small. The front depicts the Buddha in the Maravichaya posture, sitting above a double-lotus base, with the left hand holding a holy water pot. The back features deep-engraved Khmer script reading "Phuttho."

  • Sacred Powers: Believers attribute various powers to Phra Phuttho Noi, including charm, protection from harm, good fortune, successful business, and the fulfillment of wishes.

 

 

The Phra Phuttho Noi created and consecrated by Khun Mae Boonruen Tongboontum was mainly made in 1951 (BE 2494) at Wat Awutwikasitaram and was produced in four main types:

  • Jumbo Type: The largest type available.

  • Large Type: Slightly smaller than the Jumbo type, with several variations such as Large with “Phuttho” yantra on the back, Large with pointed arms, and Large with interwoven robes.

  • Medium Type: Smaller than the large, with sub-types like Medium with round water pot and Medium with topknot.

  • Small Type: The smallest of all, also with several sub-types like Small with doll face and Small with dot arms.

 

Jumbo Type: The largest type available.

 

 

Large Type: Slightly smaller than the Jumbo type, with several variations such as Large with “Phuttho” yantra on the back, Large with pointed arms, and Large with interwoven robes.

 

Medium Type: Smaller than the large, with sub-types like Medium with round water pot and Medium with topknot.

 

 

Small Type: The smallest of all, also with several sub-types like Small with doll face and Small with dot arms.

 

 

Key Characteristics of Phra Phuttho Noi, 1951

 

  • The front depicts the Buddha seated in Maravichaya posture on a double-lotus base, with the left hand holding a holy water pot.

  • The back typically bears a yantra with the deep-engraved Khmer script "Phuttho".

 

Besides the 1951 batch, Phra Phuttho Noi was also produced on other occasions and in later years, but these are generally not as popular or recognized as directly created by Khun Mae Boonruen. For example:

 

  • 1956: A consecration ceremony was held for the 1951 batch along with Phra Somdej Mongkol Mahalap at Wat Samphanthawong and Wat Saranat, Rayong Province, with Khun Mae Boonruen participating in the prayer.

  • 1968: Phra Phuttho Noi was produced again at Wat Awutwikasitaram using old materials from the 1951 batch and the original mold. Some amulets have the letter "อ" on the front, referring to Wat Awutwikasitaram.

  • 2010 and subsequent years: Wat Awutwikasitaram and other temples produced Phra Phuttho Noi again on various occasions, sometimes using old materials or new molds.

 

 

Therefore, the most recognized and revered version of "Phra Phuttho Noi" is the 1951 (BE 2494) edition, directly created and consecrated by Khun Mae Boonruen, which includes four main types and many detailed sub-types.
