Luang Pu Du Phrommapanyo was born into a humble farming family in Ban Sam Khao, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, in the Year of the Dragon, 1904 (B.E. 2447). Losing his parents at a young age was a profound loss in his life. However, this hardship likely forged his strong spirit, self-reliance, and deep compassion for others. Raised by his grandmother and elder sister, he was taught virtues and morality according to traditional rural ways, which became a fundamental foundation for his later life.
Although there is little recorded information about his early childhood and education, it is believed that he was instilled with values of gratitude, generosity, and a humble lifestyle—qualities that would become prominent traits as he matured.
Ordination and the Study of Dhamma-Vinaya: The Path to Becoming a Righteous Monk
At the age of 21, Luang Pu Du decided to ordain at Wat Sakae, an important temple in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. This ordination marked a major turning point in his life. Receiving the monastic title "Phrommapanyo" was a good omen, reflecting his wisdom and noble virtues.
Under the guidance of Luang Pho Klan from Wat Phra Yatikaram, who served as his preceptor, along with other teachers at Wat Sakae, Luang Pu Du studied Dhamma and Vinaya diligently. He emphasized both theoretical study and practical application—not merely memorizing the scriptures but deeply understanding and practicing them in daily life.
He was a monk who strictly adhered to the monastic code. He lived a humble, contented life, focusing on developing meditation and mental purification. His earnest practice became the essential foundation for his attainment of higher stages of realization.
Practicing Dhamma and Seeking Truth: Perseverance Without Retreat
Luang Pu Du placed great importance on Dhamma practice. He never wavered despite the hardships of meditation practice. He explored and practiced various methods to achieve inner peace and insight. His consistent perseverance helped stabilize his mind and cultivate wisdom through true Dhamma investigation.
Early in his monastic life, he likely received teachings from elder monks at Wat Sakae and might have traveled to meet other accomplished masters to broaden his practice. These encounters enriched his knowledge and deepened his understanding of the Dhamma.
Gaining Reverence and Spreading the Dhamma: Boundless Compassion
Through his exemplary practice, strict adherence to Dhamma-Vinaya, and abundant compassion, Luang Pu Du became widely revered by Buddhist devotees. People flocked to him for guidance, blessings, and to make merit under his care.
He was not only a spiritual refuge but also a dedicated teacher who tirelessly imparted Dhamma and meditation techniques. With great kindness, patience, and deep understanding of human nature, he emphasized mindfulness, meditation development, and living life according to the Buddha’s teachings.
"The Emperor Mantra": A Precious Dhamma Legacy
One of Luang Pu Du’s most widely recognized contributions was composing the "Emperor Mantra" (Katha Maha Chakraphat)", a sacred chant known for its great spiritual power. This mantra integrates the qualities of the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha. It is believed that regularly chanting this mantra brings merit, improves one’s spiritual realms, attracts auspiciousness, and aids meditation development.
The Emperor Mantra quickly spread among his disciples and devotees and remains highly popular today. It stands as a precious Dhamma legacy that Luang Pu Du has bestowed upon Buddhists everywhere.
Final Years and Passing Away: The Departure of a Noble Monk
Even in old age, Luang Pu Du continued practicing and offering guidance to his disciples. Although his body weakened over time, his mind remained steadfast and filled with compassion.
Luang Pu Du peacefully passed away on January 17, 1990 (B.E. 2533) at the age of 85, having spent 65 rainy seasons (vassa) in the monastic life. His passing brought great sorrow to his followers nationwide but also served as a profound reminder of the impermanence of life according to Buddhist principles.
His body was honored with a special royal cremation ceremony after being venerated for 459 days, reflecting the immense respect and reverence the people had for him.

His life story reminds us of the importance of Dhamma practice, compassion, and living in accordance with the Buddha’s teachings.
