History of Bird's Eye Chili
Bird's eye chili (Capsicum frutescens) is a chili pepper variety that has long been popular in Thailand. It has a hot and spicy flavor, a unique aroma, and is a key ingredient in many Thai dishes. It is believed that bird's eye chili originated in South America and was introduced to Asia, including Thailand, during foreign trade. Today, it is popularly grown both for commercial purposes and for household use.
How to Grow Bird's Eye Chili
1. Seed Preparation
- Select seeds from mature chili fruits that are free from diseases and pests.
- Soak the seeds in warm water for about 12 hours before sowing.
2. Soil Preparation
- Use sandy loam soil that drains well.
- Mix in compost or manure to increase fertility.
3. Seedling Propagation
- Sow the seeds in seedling trays or nursery beds, and water thoroughly.
- When the seedlings are about 25-30 days old, or have 3-5 true leaves, transplant them into the garden or pots.
4. Planting in the Garden or Pots
- If planting in the garden, space the plants 40-50 cm apart.
- If planting in pots, use pots that are 12-16 inches in size.
Bird's Eye Chili Care
1. Watering
- Water 1-2 times a day in the morning and evening, but avoid waterlogging.
2. Fertilizing
- Use compost or manure to add nutrients to the soil.
- Apply fertilizer formula 15-15-15 or 13-13-21 every 15 days to promote growth and fruiting.
3. Disease and Pest Control
- Check for pests such as thrips, fruit borers, and anthracnose disease.
- Use biological agents or natural extracts such as herbal fermented water.
Bird's Eye Chili Age
- Flowering begins at approximately 45-60 days after planting.
- Harvesting can begin at approximately 75-90 days.
