Lifestyle and Travel › Osaka Japan Trip 2025 (EP.2): Exploring Kyoto’s Sacred Land – Kiyomizu-dera & Fushimi Inari Shrine
We started the day early to pick up our rental car from Toyota Rent Car, about a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Renting a car in Japan is surprisingly simple — just book online, and it costs around 3,000 THB per day. Cars can use Japan’s expressway tolls (similar to Easy Pass in Thailand), and payment is made upon returning the car. Make sure the driver has an International Driving Permit (IDP) — you can easily apply through Thailand’s Pao Tang app. Super quick and convenient!

Our first destination was Kiyomizu-dera Temple (the Temple of Pure Water), named after its natural spring — “Kiyomizu” means “pure water.” The drive took about 40 minutes from Osaka to Kyoto.

Parking is available near the temple area, though it can be pricey. Japan offers many private parking services, so plan your stops wisely to make the most of your time.

The temple sits atop a hillside, and the walk up is lined with charming shops selling local snacks, grilled meats, sweets, and souvenirs — perfect for grabbing a bite before the climb.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple is one of Kyoto’s most iconic landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built entirely from wood without using a single nail, its massive veranda offers a breathtaking view of Kyoto city — especially stunning during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. Inside, the Otowa Waterfall features three sacred streams believed to bless visitors with health, success, and love.

After soaking in the serene temple atmosphere, we headed out for lunch at Kyoto Tempura Ten no Meshi, a hidden gem known for its crispy tempura bowls. It’s tucked in a small alley, with parking available nearby — highly recommended if you love authentic tempura!

Our afternoon stop was the world-famous Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, just a 20-minute drive away. It’s dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice, prosperity, and success in business. The thousands of bright red torii gates that line the mountain path are simply breathtaking.

That wrapped up our second day — a spiritual and heartwarming journey through Kyoto’s sacred sites. Tomorrow, we’re heading to Universal Studios Japan for a day of fun and excitement!
